SUMMARY:Biennial Latine Mental Health Conference
DESCRIPTION:Mental health professionals working with the Latine community may find themselves engaging with more than just the individual in the room\, often including a clients’ social systems into treatment. However\, providers typically operate within a health-care framework that focuses on treating individuals\, or their symptoms\, in isolation. El Futuro’s 2024 Conference\, Nunca Caminamos Solos: Supporting Latine Families Across the Lifespan\, centers on exploring the nuanced ways in which families and social contexts can connect to the mental health and well-being of our Latine clients.  \nUsing a developmental approach\, national speakers invited to participate in this 2-day virtual conference will guide participants through life’s developmental stages\, discussing the interplay of family systems and social context within each\, and their role in mental health treatment. Each 90-minute session will offer practical tools and evidence-based approaches to support family systems integration to client care\, all with the goal of moving us towards El Futuro’s mission: Nurturing stronger familias to live out their dreams.

SUMMARY:Applied Suicide Intervention Skills (ASIST) Training
DESCRIPTION:The Durham Partnership Mental Health subcommittee in partnership with the Public Health Department is hosting a 2-day\, in-person Applied Suicide Intervention Skills (ASIST) Training at the Public Health on March 13-14\, 2025\, from 8:30-5. \nASIST is an evidence-based model that teaches adults how to assist those at risk for suicide; it is not specific to mental health professionals. Suicide is recognized as a public health crisis in the US fro both men and women. Men are 4 times as likely to die by suicide than women. ASIST teaches skills to recognize signs a person is having thoughts of suicide and to confidently intervene to help keep them safe. \nThere is a common myth that talking about suicide or asking someone if they feel suicidal will encourage suicide attempts. Not true! Talking about suicide decreases risk for someone to take their own life and provides the opportunity for communication. \nDuring the training\, participants will learn how to: \n\nRecognize the signs that someone may be thinking of suicide\nReach out to someone with thoughts of suicide and talk openly\nCreate a keep-safe-for-now plan and connect them to further help and support\nUnderstand how personal and community attitudes about suicide affect someone’s openness to seek help and your ability to provide it\nSupport purposeful living and self-care\n\nPlease note that there is no hybrid option for this training. This training involves interactive role plays and activities. In order to achieve optimal outcomes\, it must be offered in person.

SUMMARY:Motivational Interviewing Introduction & Skill Building
DESCRIPTION:Motivational Interviewing is an evidence-based communication style designed to help people identify their readiness\, willingness and ability to make meaningful change in their lives.  Together we will explore this client centered approach to working with individuals to help them prepare for and commit to making change.  We will talk about techniques to draw out people in order to find out their motivations and help them become empowered to make change to meet their own goals rather than trying to persuade people to comply with our plans.  This introduction will involve a number of exercises to help distinguish the practice of Motivational Interviewing from other types of communication or psychoeducation.  Motivational interviewing can be added into other models to reduce attrition and increase the likelihood of participants’ success.  Through practice\, participants will continue to develop their comfort and confidence using Motivational Interviewing. Exercises will provide opportunities to identify change and sustain talk\, make meaningful complex reflections\, intentionally evoke and expand change talk\, and soften sustain talk. \nThis training is available through the Exchange Family Center. Please visit to learn more.

SUMMARY:The Next Generation: Contemporary Issues in Early Childhood and Emerging Directions
DESCRIPTION:Young children and families in the U.S. and around the world are living in a fast-changing world. The “new ecology” or contemporary context for the developing child includes: the persistence of inequalities\, the demand for quality childcare\, the growing impact of a changing climate\, increasing conflict\, the influence of technology\, and the need for increased social connections\, among other trends. The early childhood field plays a pivotal role in supporting families during these challenging times. The hope lies in new ways of supporting the nurturance of children\, multigenerational strategies\, cross-sector collaboration at every level\, and remaining open to innovation within a framework of long-standing principles of child development. \nJoan Lombardi\, Ph.D.\, is a longstanding champion for young children\, families\, and those who care for them. Dr. Lombardi is the director of the Early Opportunities Initiative and adjunct professor and senior advisor at the Stanford University Center for Early Childhood\, Graduate School of Education. \nOver the past 50 years\, she has made significant contributions in the areas of child and family policy as an innovative leader and policy advisor to national and international organizations and foundations and as a public servant. \nLombardi served as the first deputy assistant secretary for Early Childhood during the Obama Administration and the first director of the Child Care Bureau during the Clinton Administration. In addition\, she was the founding chair of the Birth to Five Policy Alliance (now the Alliance for Early Success). \nLombardi is the author of Time to Care: Redesigning Child Care to Promote Education\, Support Families and Build Communities and co-editor of Beacon of Hope: The Promise of Early Head Start for America’s Youngest Children. \nThe Sulzberger Distinguished Lecture Series is made possible through an endowment from the Arthur Sulzberger Family.
