Black Youth & Suicide: Understanding the Impact and Finding Solutions

Suicide is one of the leading causes of death among youth and Black youth are experiencing rising rates at alarming levels. This powerful session, organized by Durham County Department of Public Health, will explore the unique factors contributing to suicide risk in Black children and teens, including systemic barriers, racial trauma, stigma, and gaps in mental health care. The guest speaker, Dr. Sonyia Richardson, will offer insight into the latest data, lived experiences, and what families, educators, and communities can do to better support Black youth. Attendees will leave with actionable steps to promote mental wellness, resilience, and culturally responsive prevention efforts.
